Tube musings

written by Ping

I've been meaning to blog about rush hour tube rides in London since Day 1 at work, but never really got around to it. The tube population can be divided into four groups: readers, gamers, sleepers, and the stop-squishing-your-butt-against-mine-while-stepping-on-my-toe-ers.

Group 1: Londoners love to read. Like seriously, LOVE to read. Everytime I'm squeezed in with my face against the doors I still can't help but notice that at least five out of ten around me are reading something - serious newspapers, trashy newspapers, serious novels, trashy novels, the bible...(not kidding). They can read while standing, while tip toeing, while squished against doors, while farting...

Group 2: Heard of the Nintendo brain trainer? Well, you can't escape its adverts on the tube these days, and now I know why. Take any section of the tube during rush hour and you are very likely to see at least 1-2 people in each carriage gaming either on their blackberries, or Nintendo DS-es. I've seen more blackberry play (almost always bricks or brickbreaker) than Nintendo ones (snooker, tennis). Interestingly enough, I have not seen anything that involves mental aerobics in the morning. Sudokus and crosswords are reserved for the evening rush hour crowd...

Group 3: What can I say. If you're going to Canary Wharf from St John's Wood or somewhere further beyond, you either read or sleep. No two ways about it.

Group 4: Ah, my soul-mates. The London-Bridge-to-Canary-Wharf-ers. (Or worse still, the Bermondsey-to-Canary-Wharf-the-fuck-there's-never-
space-for-us-no-matter-how-anorexic-we-are-ers) We are generally polite (i.e. we queue) except when we've been disrespected (e.g. when someone cuts the queue) or assaulted (e.g. when someone shoves his tummy into my breasts. Ok, I'm short. Still.) And we secretly wish fat ladies will never step into our carriage (admit it).

I knew Hamburg is weirder than London! Hamburg-Altona to Reeperbahn, Friday night 11 p.m.: Five of ten people, reading Harry Potter`s latest book...The rest drunken. (As I was)
